What is sitemap.xml and how to set it up correctly - Zephyra Studio

Sitemap.xml is a file at the root of a site containing a list of the URLs you want Google to consider. It does not guarantee indexing and is not a ranking factor, but it helps Google find new pages and ones that have changed faster. On a small site of twenty pages the difference is modest, because Google finds everything anyway. On a site with hundreds or thousands of pages, the sitemap is one of the most useful technical files, because it shortens Google's path to what is new.

What actually goes in a sitemap

The basic version of a sitemap is an XML file with a list of addresses, the date of last change, and optionally change frequency and priority. At minimum, a list of addresses and the change date is enough.

For large sites there is a sitemap index, a file that contains no addresses but a list of other sitemaps, for example by section: products, categories, blog. Google allows up to 50,000 URLs per sitemap, so larger sites are split.

What does not go in a sitemap

Pages you do not want in search do not go in a sitemap: pages with a noindex tag, admin areas, internal search, test pages. If you put them there, Google wastes time trying to process them.

Nor do parameter duplicates or addresses that return an error. The most common mistake is automatic sitemap generation that includes every URL in the database, including the ones you deliberately excluded.

How to set it up and submit it

On WordPress sites the sitemap is usually produced by an SEO plugin, such as Yoast or Rank Math, and updates itself. On custom-built sites, it is generated by code, usually on every content change or during the build.

After setting it up, the sitemap is submitted in Google Search Console, under Sitemaps. Submitting is not mandatory, Google can find it through robots.txt, but it is useful because Search Console shows whether Google reads the file successfully.

A practical tip: check what Google actually reads

Search Console shows how many sitemap URLs are indexed and how many are not. If the indexed number is much lower, that is not a sitemap error, but a sign that Google does not consider part of those pages worth indexing.

A practical check: open the sitemap in a browser and review a few addresses. If you come across a page you do not want in search, the sitemap is probably generating too much. If all the addresses are accurate and current, the file is doing its job.

Key takeaways

  • Sitemap.xml is a list of URLs that helps Google find content, not a ranking factor.
  • Only pages you want in search belong in it, without noindex pages, duplicates, or errors.
  • It is generated by code or an SEO plugin, and submitted in Google Search Console.
  • A low count of indexed URLs in Search Console reflects a content judgment, not a file error.

Conclusion

A sitemap is one of the cheapest technical fixes on a site: set up once, it maintains itself if generated by code. If you do not know whether your sitemap contains the right addresses, our technical SEO work includes that check as part of a standard review.

Not directly. A sitemap helps Google find pages, but position still depends on the content itself, technical health, and links.
