What is a meta description and how to write a good one - Zephyra Studio

A meta description is a short block of roughly 155 to 160 characters that describes a page in Google search results, under the title. It does not affect your position directly, but it affects how many people click once that page appears. Two results at the same position can get very different numbers of visits, based only on how the description is written. Google sometimes rewrites it, pulls a sentence from the page, or truncates it, so even a good description is no guarantee. It is still worth writing well: when Google judges that your text matches the query, it keeps it.

Where the meta description lives

In the page code, inside the head section, there is a line shaped like <meta name="description" content="...">. Whatever sits in the content attribute is the text Google may display. On WordPress sites an SEO plugin such as Yoast or Rank Math usually handles this; on custom-built sites the field is added in the template.

Every page needs its own description. Twenty pages sharing the same text is a common mistake and an obvious one.

What separates a good description from a weak one

A good description answers one question: why would someone pick this result. So it carries a concrete benefit or solution, not a repeat of the title. Example: the title "Website development" and the description "Websites up to ten pages, with SEO basics and training to edit them yourself, from first sketch to launch."

A weak description is either too short ("Welcome to our website"), not about that page, or a string of keywords with no meaning. Google recognises all three as weak signals and often replaces them with its own text.

Why Google sometimes shows different text

Google picks the text that best answers the specific query. When your description is vague and a sentence deeper in the page answers the search question exactly, Google will show that sentence instead.

That is why it pays to write a short paragraph right under the page heading that answers the main question on its own. That opening paragraph is the most common source of text Google pulls in place of a meta description.

Length, and where to put the important part

Keep the length to around 158 characters, because text is cut after that. On a phone even less shows, roughly 120 characters, so put the most important information at the start, not the end.

A practical test: read only the first half of the description. If it already shows what the page offers, the description does its job on a small screen too.

Key takeaways

  • A meta description does not lift rankings directly, but it decides how many people click.
  • Keep it to around 158 characters, with the important part first, because phones cut it short.
  • Every page needs its own description; the same text everywhere is a common mistake.
  • Google can rewrite the description from the page text, so make the first paragraph answer the main question.

Conclusion

If your site already gets traffic and its titles and descriptions have sat untouched since launch, changing them is one of the fastest moves with a measurable effect on clicks. Our SEO optimisation service includes rewriting titles and descriptions for pages that already work, not only for new ones.

Not directly. Google has stated it is not a ranking factor, but it is a factor in how many people click, and clicks plus visitor behaviour can influence things indirectly over time.
