Brutalism in Web Design - Zephyra Studio

What brutalism is and who it's for

Brutalism in web design is a style that consciously rejects the polished, photo-perfect aesthetic in favour of a raw, direct look. Instead of soft shadows, perfectly aligned margins and subtle palettes, brutalism uses thick black borders, bold, clashing colours, large and often unconventional typography, and a layout that feels deliberately 'scattered'. The rule isn't beauty by convention - it's impact and honesty.

It's aimed primarily at creative and agency brands, studios, music and art projects, startups that want to look bold, and any brand that sees its competitors as too similar and too uniform. In more conservative fields like legal or financial services, brutalism is a deliberately riskier choice that needs a conscious decision and a clear reason. The goal isn't for the site to look neat - it's for a visitor to remember it after the first second.

Advantages of brutalism compared to alternatives

Compared to minimalism, which builds its strength on empty space and quiet, brutalism builds its strength on volume and contrast. Minimalism is a safe choice that's easy to accept, but just as easy to disappear into a crowd of similar-looking sites. Compared to a corporate style, which sends a message of stability and seriousness, brutalism sends a message of attitude and confidence. Where glassmorphism creates an effect of softness and depth, brutalism deliberately creates an effect of rawness and directness. Brutalism isn't chosen because it's prettier - it's chosen because it's a clearer statement about the brand.

The main practical advantage is memorability and differentiation: a visitor who sees five sites in the same niche that all look like variations on the same theme will remember the brutalist one out of the crowd. A second advantage is that this style forces a clear message, since there's nowhere to hide behind decoration, so the content is forced to be concrete. The price of this advantage is that brutalism, as a rule, turns part of the audience away, and that's part of the deal: the style is chosen when it's better to be clearly remembered by some than mildly accepted by everyone. This angle shouldn't be confused with 3D/immersive or neumorphism styles, which also depart from convention but do so through effects and depth, not through rawness of form.

How we work with brutalism

Work starts with a conversation to establish how loud the brand is allowed to be and which audience we can't afford to lose, since brutalism without restraint easily tips into unreadability. We then define a concrete visual language: a palette of at most a few bold colours, typography, and how borders, contrast and asymmetry build the layout, checking that everything stays readable on mobile too. Stefan works directly with the client, replies to enquiries within 24-48 hours, smaller and mid-sized sites are built within 2-3 weeks, and two rounds of design revisions are included in the price. Where the style calls for it, integrating any needed external service or plugin, such as WordPress or Stripe, is also possible, since that kind of technical integration is confirmed feasible.

Approximate price

The price depends on the scope of the project: number of pages, amount of custom graphics and interaction, and how radical the brutalist expression is and how much extra work it needs for readability and accessibility. Because of that we don't publish a fixed number. You get the exact figure through the calculator or a conversation, once we define the scope together. Payment follows the 50% deposit before work starts and the remaining 50% on completion and delivery, with no instalments.

Frequently asked questions

Brutalism is a style that deliberately breaks the rules: raw fonts, bold colours, harsh borders and asymmetry. It's used when a brand wants to be remembered and to stand out, not when the goal is to blend into a conventional, conservative look.

It doesn't have to. Brutalism affects the visual expression, not the technical structure - headings, metadata, speed and semantics stay the same as with any other style. We just make sure contrast, font size and layout stay readable, especially on mobile, since that's exactly where brutalism most often goes wrong.
